Overview
Everything inside, at a glance
NextStep With Summer is one friendly place for kids in grades 1–4 to practice the subjects they learn in school, play games, read stories, and earn rewards, with Summer the toucan as their guide.
Five subject islands
Math, Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Arts & Humanities. Each island has 8 stops that unlock one after another.
Monthly missions
Each month Summer picks one stop per subject, following the school year from September to April. Behind or joining late? Summer picks up from where your child is.
9 games
Six math games plus Word Scramble for reading, Sort It Out for science and social studies, and Pattern Parade for arts.
76 illustrated storybooks
19 stories for each grade, including retold classic tales. Kids read page by page, then answer a few questions about what they read.
Fact World
Fun trivia that sparks curiosity about animals, space, geography, and more.
Stars and treasure chests
Every finished stop earns a star. Five stars fill a treasure chest with a prize to open.
Weekly streaks and badges
Playing at least once a week grows a streak and earns badges at 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeks.
Grade Crews
Kids join a crew with other families in the same grade. A friendly monthly leaderboard shows first names only, with no chat and no contact.
Parent Zone
A 4-digit PIN protects settings and billing. Parents see a progress report and can change the grade, language, and favorite subject.
English and Español
The whole app and every lesson are available in English and Spanish. Pick the language during setup.
A typical month with Summer
- Start of the month. Summer shows this month's mission for each subject.
- Each week. About 15 minutes at a time: finish a stop, play a game, or read a story. One session a week keeps the streak alive.
- Along the way. Stars add up, the treasure chest fills, and new stops unlock.
- Any time. Parents check the progress report in the Parent Zone.
